Swindon Libraries’ Birthday Celebration – more than books!
Join us on Thursday 14th November for a day of festivities at the Central Library to celebrate 70 years of Swindon Libraries!
2013 is a very special year for Swindon Libraries as we are celebrating not just 70 years of library services in Swindon, but various other special library birthdays as well. The present Highworth Library has been open for 10 years but there has been a library in Highworth for 50 years. The first library opened in Moredon 60 years ago and the present building opened 40 years ago! North Swindon Library has also been open for 10 years, and the new Central Library has been open for 5 years this year!
The Information Team will be running a fun monopoly competition in the Central Library all day with a chance to win your own copy of the new Swindon Monopoly game!
The day includes :-
10:00 – 12:00 and 5:00 – 7:00pm: E-book demonstrations – you can bring in your E-book readers and staff will answer your queries and assist you to get access to our E books service.
10:30 – 11:30am: Localities drop in coffee morning.
11:00am: Bookstart Bear rhyme time with the Chief Executive of Swindon Borough Council, Gavin Jones: a special story and rhyme time with Bookstart Bear and Gavin Jones! Bring a camera and have your picture taken with the Bookstart Bear!
Pick up a colouring competition form at the Central Library for under 5s before our Birthday event, get your entry in to the Central Library by Tuesday 12th November – we will be announcing the winner of the beautiful book “Santa is Coming to Swindon” after this special birthday story time! 12:00 – 2:00pm: Jazz trio MSG Collective in Chapters Café
6:00 – 8:00pm: Meet the artist session with Tim Carroll in the Cafe area – come along and have a chat with Tim about his art exhibition, currently on display in the Central Library.
There will be displays highlighting the different kinds of work carried out by library teams, as well as displays from local history groups and organisations such as Barnes Coaches, Outset Swindon, South Asian Performing Arts Centre, Mind and Swindon Radio.

The first Central Library opened in McIlroys, Regent St on the 14th August 1943. The Central Junior Library opened on the 20th August 1943 in the former Electricity Showrooms, Regent Circus which is now Rudi’s Wine Bar! Moredon’s first library opened in the Methodist Mission Chapel, The Street, Moredon on 22nd August, 1953. The current library in Church Walk North opened to the public in November 1973. Prior to 1963 Highworth was served by a Mobile Library based in Marlborough. Wiltshire Library and Museum Service rented premises from January 1963 in High Street until 27th April 1970. The current library in Brewery Street opened on 18th August 2003. North Swindon Library was the first Swindon Library to open on Sundays when it opened in May 2003.
