Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays. The Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries to maintain their reading skills and confidence. Because everything changes when we read.

After reading the 1st book children will be able to do a trail at Swindon Museum and Art gallery for the chance to get a special prize. When children have read 4 books they will receive a voucher for a free children’s DVD from Swindon Libraries.

Last year, in Swindon, children read a record 13, 684 books throughout the summer. This year, we are challenging children to read 14,000!  We will be updating progress regularly via the @SwindonLibrary Twitter feed and on this blog.

During the months of July and August there will also be a library card amnesty and fines will be waived on children’s library cards.

Library staff and volunteers will be on hand to help children win medals for reading, and an interactive ‘Mythical Maze’ website will link children with top authors and illustrators whilst giving them room to talk about their favourite books and share reading ideas: www.mythical-maze.org.uk
Under 8s can take part in a colouring competition, and over 8s can join in an art/poetry competition. Over 8s winners will also  have the chance to have their artwork/poem printed on a certificate which will be given out to our Summer Reading Challenge volunteers at the end of the summer – pick up entry forms at your local library.

Enrolment starts from Saturday 12th July and young adventurers can explore the ‘Mythical Maze’ from Saturday 19th July until Sunday 7th September 2014.

Nessy and chumsThe Summer Reading Challenge™ has been running for fifteen years, and last year a record 810,089 children took part during the summer. It is created and run by The Reading Agency, and delivered by libraries.
