With so many recipe books around these days, it can be incredibly hard to choose which ones to buy! Have you ever been lured by the luscious, perfect pictures and claims that you too can easily make this look (and taste) so beautiful at home…and found the recipes incomprehensible or impossible to reproduce? So, we thought, take one inept at cooking member of library staff (who can burn a boiled egg) and challenge them to try out different cookery challenges, using recipes from books in Swindon Libraries.

We’d really love it if you wanted to share your experiences and pictures too!

October Challenge: Using avocado as an ingredient

daisy lowe sweetness and lightBook used: Sweetness & Light by Daisy Lowe

Blurb says: Sweetness & Light is a new collection by model Daisy Lowe of recipes for 60 healthy sweet treats. By making simple changes to ingredients, such as using maple syrup rather than refined sugar, or discovering new ingredients such as raw chocolate, these recipes are transformed into something devilishly delicious but angelically healthy.

Split over seven chapters including Make-you-feel-great cakes, Skinny puddings and Scream for ice cream, and featuring such treats as apricot and ginger cake, frangipane tart with pears and lemon and lime scented granita, there is a recipe suitable for any craving.

Recipe attempted: Ultimate Chocolate and Avocado Torte

Yes, chocolate and AVOCADO! This sounds totally mad but it really works. This is a no bake torte, with the base made out of dessicated coconut and ground macadamia nuts whizzed up with dates and cinammon. The dates give the base a little bit of gooeyness. Really simple and delicious! But not cheap!

Yes, avocado - and chocolate - really!!!!

Yes, avocado – and chocolate – really!!!!

Banana is mixed with the avocado and cacao powder to take the edge of the avocado and folk will be left guessing just what is in this torte – while they ask for more!

Verdict: Healthy naughty treat that will intrigue your friends; dead simple to make but the ingredients are a little on the expensive side! This book is lovely to look at, a bit of a coffee table aspirational lifestyle offering, but none of the recipes include sugar, and many are gluten and dairy free, whilst some of them are vegan and a few are raw so well worth checking out.

The beauty of a library book is you can always try the recipes before you buy the book! You can reserve Sweetness & Light via our online catalogue for free, and pick it up from your most convenient library.

The end result - it didn't last for long!

The end result – sure Mary Berry would be horrified at the presentation, but it was so yummy it didn’t last for long!
