Library Engagement Events and Survey
Swindon Borough Council currently runs 15 libraries across the borough at a cost of £2.6m per year. Due to the council’s current financial pressures it is no longer affordable to run the library service in its current format. It is therefore necessary for the council to review how the library service is delivered and make changes to ensure that it meets the demands of local residents whilst operating within budget. Libraries are also changing in line with technology and user habits, giving the Council an opportunity to redesign the library service to meet users needs.
In December 2015 the council signalled a £1.5m reduction in the library service to be achieved by 2020. To achieve this the Council needs to write a strategy and over the coming months is running an engagement process to ask residents, library users, community groups and other interested parties to help do this. A number of engagement events, stakeholder meetings and a questionnaire will facilitate the process.

Library services survey
The Council wants to hear your thoughts, ideas and priorities for libraries in Swindon to help develop new approaches to library services that respond to the needs of local residents but within the financial constraints. See Library services in Swindon to find out more and take the survey online. Closing time for completed surveys is 5.00pm on Friday 29 April 2016.
A leaflet that sets out the situation in more detail and is intended to answer many of your questions is available: Libraries_services_survey_FAQ
You may also want to read the Cabinet Report on Libraries.
Once a strategy is written it will be taken to the Council’s Cabinet in June and will trigger a formal consultation followed by implementation in the years leading up to 2020.
