North Swindon Library Sunday Reading Group recommend….

We asked, in 2012 which book has stayed with you and why?

Out‘ by Natsuo Kirino (translated from the Japanese by Stephen Snyder) has proved a hit with readers.

Out by Natsuo Kireno
Out by Natsuo Kireno proved popular with Reading Group members.

This story follows four women factory workers in Tokyo who dream of escaping their dead-end lives. When one of them murders her womanising, gambling husband, a chain of events begins which sees all four pursued by the police, the Japanese underworld, and a ruthless nightclub owner framed by the police for the murder.

Here’s what our readers had to say:

“I didn’t expect to finish this book at the start, but got drawn in and found I was thinking about it, what happened, the characters and the culture in between sessions and enjoyed the discussion at the book group” (Lyndsey)

“A real insight into Japanese culture for women – in particular factory life, the way the women were lonely and not appreciated by their men folk or children. Not a ‘nice’ subject but I really did not want these women to be caught for their crime. The first time I have thought about the Japanese and their culture” (Pat)….
